ASEAN TMview - Help

STANDARD SEARCH

The standard search function can be found in the Home page of ASEAN TMview.

This standard search is based on a single search criterion. All trademarks containing the string of text you have provided will be retrieved. The field for entering the string of text is not case sensitive.

When you would like to be more restrictive with your search and use more than one search criterion, ASEAN TMview provides two alternative search options:

  1. the filter section option.
  2. the advanced search option.

FILTER SECTION

When you perform a standard search, a “Filters” button is displayed below the search bar. By clicking on this button, information about the records that match your current search will be displayed, allowing you to narrow your search to only particular categories without entering additional search terms.

Each tap in the left hand side of the Filter area divides the matching records into categories and list the number of records in your search matching each category. You can use this purely for information, or use it to refine your search.

You can refine your search for each of the categories listed below:

Status: if you would like to limit your search to one or several situations that occur during the life of a trademark as listed in the table displayed in the Filter area, click on the label(s) of your interest and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter bar.

Trademark type: if you would like to limit your search to one or several trademark types as listed in the table displayed in the Filter area, click on the label(s) of your interest and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter bar.

Dates: if you would like to limit your search to a period of time from those proposed in the table displayed in the Filter area, click on the period(s) of your interest and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter bar.

Nice class: the filter area shows you a list of the forty-five Nice classes with the number of associated records for your search. If you would like to limit your search to one or several Nice classes, click on them and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter area.

Vienna codes: the filter area shows you a list of up to forty Vienna codes with the number of associated records for your search. If you would like to limit your search to one or several Vienna codes, click on them and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter area.

Applicant name: the filter area shows the names of the twenty applicants with more associated records for your search. If you would like to limit your search to one or several applicants only, click on his/her name(s) and then on the Filter button on the right of the filter bar.

Please note that when you refine your search this way, the filters that you apply will be displayed in the filter bar at the top of the Filter area. You can remove one or more of those filters by pressing on the “x” on the right of each filter box. You will then need to click on the Filter button on the right of the filter bar to apply the changes. Alternatively, if you would like to remove all the filters at once, you can click on the Clear button on the right of the filter bar.

WILDCARDS

Wildcards can be used when searching for trademark names in the standard search and the advanced search and/or application /registration number in the advanced search.

Wildcard -- <term>* -- allows you to match single or multiple characters within words. The '*' wildcard will match either 0 or multiple letters in your term. e.g. trade will match 'trade', 'trades', 'trader', etc. you can use wildcards at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of your term. e.g.*trade or tr*de or trad*.

Wildcard -- <term>? -- allows you to match any single character within a word. e.g. b?ll will match 'ball', 'bell' and 'bill'. Note that you can use wildcards at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of your term.

ADVANCED SEARCH

The advanced search provides the choice of 10 search criteria which can be used separately or in combination. Specific information for each of the ten fields is provided below.

Please read carefully these two explanatory notes related to the Advanced Search screen that can help you when first using this search option:

  1. The following search criteria cannot be used alone: Trademark type, Nice class and Vienna code. These criteria must be combined with at least one more search criteria .
  2. When an IP office does not use in its register certain criteria, those same criteria cannot be used to search their trademarks. Because searches may be launched for all the offices at once, if you use in the advanced search a criterion not available for an office, ASEAN TMview will show the results for this office, but without applying the mentioned search criterion to the list of results from this office.

Advanced Search Fields

Trademark name: ASEAN TMview will search and retrieve all marks where the entered string appears as a separate word. If more than one word is entered, ASEAN TMview will retrieve all marks where each entered string appears as a separate word in the same trademark name.

Additional options:

  • Fuzzy search: you can check this box to search for trademarks with similar names (similar in spelling).
Please note this type of search is based on the Levenshtein distance, or edit distance algorithm. To do a fuzzy search, ASEAN TMview will ask you to select the percentage (%) of similarity that you are looking to obtain in the results list against the string of text that you have entered in the trademark name field. As default, this percentage (%) is established in 70% but you can choose higher or lower similarity percentage from the drop down menu that will appear next to the Fuzzy search box. The closer to 100% that you select, the highest similarity to your text string.
To help you recognise that a fuzzy search is being carried out, a message indicating “*TM Name fuzzy search” will appear in red under the standard search field at the top of the search criteria.
  • Phrase Search: you can check this box to retrieve trademarks that include the exact string entered (trademark name and respective order). This option only works when the trademark contains more than one word. If only one word is entered, the search will retrieve the same list of results as a normal search.

Application / Registration number: ASEAN TMview allows you to search for a specific trademark if you know the application or registration number for the trademark you are looking for.

Trademark type: the search by trademark type offers four search options:

SEARCH OPTION RESULTS
All Any trademark will be searched for
Word Word marks consist solely of words and contain no figurative elements
Figurative Figurative marks have a graphical representation
Combined When a figurative trademark also contains a name (having a name is the characteristic of a word mark) then ASEAN TMview classifies this figurative trademark as a combined trademark
Undefined In ASEAN TMview, this type refers to any trademark type except those already covered by Word, Figurative and Combined

Trademark status: the search by trademark statuses offers six search options:

RESULTS SEARCH OPTION
All Any trademark will be included in the search
Registered The trademark is legally protected
Filed The trademark is still an application and is undergoing the examination procedure. The trademark has therefore not been registered yet.
Ended The trademark has been refused, cancelled, withdrawn etc.
Expired The trademark has been refused, cancelled, withdrawn etc.
Other The trademark does not fit into any of the above categories

Applicant name: ASEAN TMview will search and retrieve all marks where the entered string appears in the applicant name. If more than one name is entered, ASEAN TMview will retrieve all marks where each entered string appears in the applicant name.

Additional options:

  • Fuzzy search: you can check this box to search for applicants names that are similar in spelling.
Please note this type of search is based on the Levenshtein distance, or edit distance algorithm. To do a fuzzy search, ASEAN TMview will ask you to select the percentage (%) of similarity that you are looking to obtain in the results list against the string of text that you have entered in the applicant name field. As default, this percentage (%) is established in 70% but you can choose higher or lower similarity percentage from the drop down menu that will appear next to the Fuzzy search box. The closer to 100% that you select, the highest similarity to your text string.
To help you recognise that a fuzzy search is being carried out, a message indicating “*Applicant Name fuzzy search” will appear in red under the standard search field at the top of the search criteria.

Nice class: Nice Class contains numerical codes that describe the goods and services associated with the trademark.

You can search for one or more classes by indicating the numerical codes separated by commas (do not leave spaces between the coma and the following number), e.g. 12,35; 1,14,20.

If you would like to search for several correlative classes, you can do so by indicating the first and last numerical code you would like to search for with two dots between them, e.g. 12..15.

For help finding the relevant classes, click the selector button to the right of the search field. The selector displays the class headings of each class and allows you to choose class numbers. Mark one or more class numbers by clicking on each number and click OK to add the class number(s) to the search field.

WARNING: please be aware that the Nice class cannot be used alone as a search criterion. It has to be combined with at least one more criterion.

Vienna code: Vienna class contains numerical codes that describe the visual appearance of the image associated to each record, if any. You can search for Vienna classifications by entering the desired Vienna code in the search field using the format 00.00.00.

It is not possible to search by Vienna code using the main category alone, e.g. 01, a search specifying the second level, e.g. 01.01, will retrieve all marks belonging to the particular subcategory. Entering the entire code, e.g. 01.01.12 will find marks classified in this subcategory only.

WARNING: Please be aware that the Vienna code cannot be used alone as a search criterion. It has to be combined with at least one more criterion.

Opposition: by checking the box in this field, you will search only for trademarks that currently are in the opposition period.

WARNING: Please note ASEAN TMview uses the international Gregorian calendar.

Application date: to find trademarks applied for within a particular period, type the dates of such period using the 'DD-MM-YYYY' format. If you only fill in the From field, the search will retrieve marks with an application date on and after the entered date. If you only fill in the To field, the search will retrieve marks with an application date on or before the entered date.

WARNING: Please note ASEAN TMview uses the international Gregorian calendar.

Registration date: to find trademarks registered within a particular period, type the dates of such period using the 'DD-MM-YYYY' format. If you only fill in the From field, the search will retrieve marks with a registration date on and after the entered date. If you only fill in the To field, the search will retrieve marks with a registration date on or before the entered date.

WARNING: Please note ASEAN TMview uses the international Gregorian calendar.

Sort results by: you can sort the list of results by a preferred field by choosing it from the drop down menu list.

Order results: you can sort the results either in ascending or descending order by choosing your preferred option from the drop down menu.

RESULTS

The moment you perform a search, the results area display the records that match your current search.

Two main sections are available concerning the results of your search:

  • Results area, including the pager bar that lets you navigate through the results set and the list of results that displays details of each record.
  • Record view, which takes you to a separate screen when pressing on the Trademark Name or Application/Registration Number in the list of results.

RESULTS AREA

Pager Bar

The pager bar shows a quick summary of your result set, and lets you navigate between pages of results. You can find this bar at both, the top and at the bottom of the record list to ease your navigation. It is divided into several areas:

  • First, the page area that lets you navigate between pages of records. The text box lets you enter a specific page of results you are interested in, or you can use the navigation buttons around the box to move to the next/previous or first/last pages of results.
  • Next, the number of records you are viewing per page can be changed from the default (10) to 20, 30, 50, 75 or 100, depending on your wishes.
  • Next, your position in your result set is shown, e.g. Displaying Results 601-700 of 1280. This means you are currently viewing records 601-700 out of a total of 1280.

Additionally, at the top pager bar you are given the option to send the record list by e-mail, to print it out. Please note you will need to preselect the records you are interested in before printing. When you click the icon, a new window with the whole list of design fields will open. You can add or remove fields by selecting/deselecting the check box next to each field. The minimal information identifying the design cannot be deselected namely, indication of the product, design number and design office.

At the bottom pager bar, you are given the following additional options to help you configure the list of results:

  • View/Hide columns: when you click on this option, a checklist with all the column titles is displayed. You can select/unselect depending on your wishes.
  • Reset columns: click this button in order to apply the default values.

List of Results

The list of results shows the specific records that match your current search. Records are displayed by default in a List format.

  • You have the option to choose that the records are displayed as a gallery of images by clicking on the icon located under the search bar.

TIP: when the trademark number starts with WO, this indicates it is an international registration, filed through WIPO and having effects in the national IP office as the designated country.

The order of the columns may be changed by dragging the column heading to the desired place.

You can hide a column by clicking on the 'Hide column' option displayed when moving the mouse to the right of each column header.

To access the details of a trademark displayed in the list of search results, click on the TM Name or TM Number in the list of results. A new tab containing the trademark details will appear next to the tap with the list of search results. Up to ten tabs with trademark details can be displayed simultaneously.

RECORD VIEW

All details available for each trademark will be displayed in a separate screen when pressing on the Trademark Name or Application/Registration Number in the list of results. You will be able to open up to 5 record screens at the time.

You will be able to export the information for a particular trademark in PDF, excel or XML formats as well as print for further reference. All these actions can be performed by clicking on the different icons that appear on the bar at the top of the record screen.

WARNING: Please do not use your browser 'back' button, as this might navigate you away from your current search or ASEAN TMview
